When recording vocals, always record at 24-bit resolution, and I suggest a peak record level of -10 dBFS. At 24-bit there is no need to push the level higher than this. These settings should produce the best signal-to-noise ratio with the vast majority of microphone preamplifiers. In any event, avoid any red lights on microphone preamps or mixing console channels when recording Adjust the gain level on your preamp and audio interface to ensure the mic is not clipping. Try to maintain an average level of -18dBfs and peak levels around -10dBfs. Colored preamps will add coloration, which is to say that it imparts its own signature sound to your recording This is accomplished by setting the Threshold of the compressor. Any audio signal that passes (louder) than the Threshold will be compressed. If the audio signal never reaches the Threshold setting, it will NOT be compressed. The Threshold setting is variable due to the fact that audio recording can be at various levels. For example, you can record a vocal part at a very low pre-amp level.

Filter more when the vocals sounds confused or disrupted, filter less if the slap effect needs to be heard clearly in the mix, rather than felt. 4. Use stereo slap for a bigger, wider soun Setting a pre-delay to come in a little after the transient of the words lets the initial attack come through clearly. The pre-delay can also be set according to the tempo of the track, like the reverb's decay time. Using the same methods for finding decay times, you can measure a desired time for the pre-delay slap to come in. I usually measure a shorter time on the grid (something like 1/64, or 1/128 note) and set the pre-delay to that Its classy distortion is particularly well suited for vocals in my opinion especially in triode mode where it adds a pleasant sheen, weight and presence effortlessly. For a more aggressive sound, it's capable of adding a lot of grit yet remain very musical. In such situations, however, like the original hardware, the bass can get lost and use the Mix knob (not found on the original unit) if necessary to dial some of it back.
